Perinatal support

Having a baby can bring many emotions, especially when there are concerns about your baby’s health.

At Derian House Children’s Hospice, our Perinatal Team supports babies and families during pregnancy, after birth, and beyond when a baby has a life-limiting or life-threatening condition.

We are here to listen, support, and help families feel less alone during an uncertain time.

Every family’s journey is different, and support is always shaped around your needs and wishes.

Families can access as much or as little support as feels right for them.

Creating memories

Creating memories together can be an important part of your journey as a family.

We can support families with:

Hand and footprints
Memory boxes and keepsakes
Journaling and memory books
Quiet time together in a calm and supportive environment

Everything is guided by what feels meaningful and comfortable for your family.

Support in hospital, at home, or at Derian House

Support can be provided wherever feels right for your family and circumstances.

This may include visits in neonatal units, support at home, or care at Derian House, including help preparing for discharge home where appropriate.

Whatever your journey looks like, we are here for you.

“There is no pressure, no expectation, and no obligation.” – Derian mum

Understanding and planning ahead

We are here to help families make sense of complex medical information and decisions.

We can support you by:

Explaining medical language in a clear and simple way
Talking through care options, wishes, and priorities
Supporting advance care planning
Helping share plans with hospital and community teams

We will always work at your pace, giving you time and space to ask questions and revisit conversations when needed.

Appointments and hospital support

We can support you at appointments, scans, and meetings with specialists as a familiar and supportive presence.

We can also help with communication between hospital teams and support families during difficult or overwhelming conversations.

Working alongside your care team

We work closely with neonatal units, hospital teams, GPs, and community professionals to help families feel informed and supported throughout their journey.

Our Perinatal Nurse, hospice Midwife, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, counsellors, and Family Support Team work together to provide joined-up, personalised support for every family.
